Can I join AFROTC if I don’t have a scholarship?
Yes, you can join AFROTC without a scholarship. Many cadets begin the program without a scholarship and may later compete for one based on academic performance, leadership, and physical fitness.
What are the eligibility requirements to join AFROTC at Detachment 590?
To join AFROTC at Detachment 590, you must:
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
- Be a U.S. citizen (or in the process of obtaining citizenship).
- Meet age and physical fitness requirements.
What is the time commitment for AFROTC?
AFROTC requires a significant commitment, typically about 5-10 hours per week, which includes:
- Physical Training (PT)
- Aerospace Studies classes
- Leadership Lab (LLAB)
However, the more you put into the program, the more you will get out of it. So it’s really up to you how many additional opportunities you’d like to pursue.
What is the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA)?
The PFA tests your physical readiness and includes:
- 1.5-mile run (completed within a specified time based on age and gender).
- Push-ups (max reps in 1 minute)
- Sit-ups (max reps in 1 minute)
Cadets are encouraged to meet the minimum standards each semester and are required to pass a PFA before Field Training.
What happens after I graduate from AFROTC?
Upon graduation, if successfully completing the program (including qualifying for field training), you will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force or Space Force, with a minimum 4-year active duty commitment, depending on your career field. You will begin your career as an officer in various roles, including aviation, engineering, intelligence, or medical fields.
What scholarships does AFROTC offer?
AFROTC offers high school and in-college scholarships, which may cover:
- Tuition assistance.

- Stipends for living expenses.

Can I apply for a scholarship if I’m already in college?
