Scholarships & Career

At Detachment 590, we are committed to investing in your future—both academically and professionally. Whether you’re looking for financial assistance to help you succeed in college or exploring the many career paths available as an officer in the U.S. Air Force or Space Force, we are here to support you every step of the way. From competitive scholarships that ease the burden of tuition to guidance on securing a fulfilling career after commissioning, our team is dedicated to helping you achieve your goals and make the most of your ROTC experience.

AFROTC offers a variety of scholarships designed to help ease the financial burden of college while rewarding academic excellence and leadership potential. These scholarships are available to both high school and current college students, covering tuition, fees, and offering additional stipends for textbooks and living expenses. Whether you are just beginning your journey at UNC or already a cadet at Detachment 590, there are opportunities available to support your education. Our team is here to guide you through the application process and help you find the scholarship that best fits your needs.

The High School Scholarship Program is open to high school seniors or high school graduates who have not yet attended college as a full-time student.  HSSP scholarships are announced annually through the Air Force ROTC website (www.afrotc.com).  This website contains information regarding eligibility, application procedures, and the online application. Students can only apply for the HSSP program via the website.

The In-College Scholarship Program is open to individuals currently enrolled as full-time students in the Air Force ROTC program.  ICSP is tailored to meet specific officer production needs.  Because of this, the types of scholarships offered and to whom (i.e. freshman, sophomores, etc.) varies from semester to semester.

The CMLA Scholarship Program is granted to 100% of all qualified cadets who have successfully completed Field Training and have entered the Professional Officer Course, which spans their junior year and senior years. It is a two-year scholarship that provides up to $18,000 in tuition assistance each year (which can be converted to a housing benefit of $10,000). This award helps relieve financial burden on all cadets who may not have had a prior opportunity to obtain a scholarship.

After successfully completing AFROTC and earning a degree, cadets commission as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force.
